Those MacBooks default to the integrated GPU when they're not being pushed hard. I can get around it by just plugging a mouse in. I don’t even really even have to do that. The only purchase would be a replacement trackpad which goes for about $20 it appears. I need something for financial email and such. Luckily I bought the fans years ago but never bothered to install them and I’ve got a spare sata SSD. I mostly just want something that is technically a full machine, as there seems to be a bunch of phone apps that require an actual machine for full functionality even if it’s slower, and I don’t consider my games box secure. It’s enough for browsing and email, and maybe some GIMP training. I suspect the discrete gpu is already hosed. The 15" and 17" 2011 MacBook Pros are notoriously unreliable machines (mostly related to GPU issues), and as such they're just not worth a whole lot anymore. You'll be able to boot from it whenever you reinstall it.ĭon't put much money at all into that machine. ![]() You can pull the drive out and keep it elsewhere.
